From the AND Reference Database: '(Maurice) Harold Macmillan, 1st Earl of Stockton (1894-1986) British statesman and prime minister (1957--63), born in London, England, UK, the grandson of Daniel MacMillan. He studied at Oxford, and became a Conservative MP in 1924. He was minister of housing (1951--4), minister of defence (1954--5), foreign secretary (1955), and Chancellor of the Exchequer (1955--7), and succeded Eden as premier. He gained unexpected popularity with his infectious enthusiasm, effective domestic policy ("most of our people have never had it so good'), and resolute foreign policy, and he was re-elected in 1959. After several political setbacks, he resigned through ill health in 1963, and left the House of Commons in 1964. He became Chancellor of Oxford University in 1960, and was made an earl on his 90th birthday in 1984.'
