Loos, Anita (1888 - 1981) From The Macmillan Dictionary of Women's Biography,'Anita Loos, American screenwriter and novelist, was born in Sissons, California, and started writing for her father's paper at the age of ten; she then worked as a child actress for touring companies in San Francisco. Her film script were accepted and produced by D.W. Griffith between 1912 and 1916, and she also wrote screenplays for films with Douglas Fair-banks. She claimed to have invented 'talking' titles for silent films (conveying only dialogue) and she wrote the sub-titles for Griffith's Intolerance ( (1916)). In 1919 she married the film director John Emerson, with whom she collaborated on scripts, stage plays and books. She retired and wrote the novel Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in (1925); the story has since been through over 85 editions, and has been turned into a play (1951), a musical and a film (1953). Loos returned to film-writing for sound films, including San Francisco ( (1936)) with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy.'
