From the publisher: "This volume contains in their entirety all of Stevenson's previously published and unpublished writings about his trip to California in 1879-1880. In defiance of family and friends, the 29 year old Stevenson left Scotland on a 12,000 mile journey to be reunited with Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne, the married American with whom he had fallen in love." From the Editor's Note: "Most of the text here used is from the Edinburgh Edition of Stevenson's works. Of that edition it is Volume III, issued in 1895. The Edinburgh Edition is divided into three major sections: The Amateur Emigrant, The Old and New Pacific Capitals, and The Silverado Squatters. The larger part of the first section, dealing with Stevenson's crossing of the Atlantic, had not been published before and was bowdlerized at the insistence of family and friends. In the present edition the finished but previously unpublished text is made available thanks to the courtesy of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University."
