Brooke was the Sterling Professor of English at Yale University and a leading authority on Shakespeare and Elizabethan literature. From the preface: We have attempted in this volume to illustrate by means of adequate texts, adequately annotated, the main course of English dramatic literature during the sixty years of heyday sometimes termed 'Elizabethan.' The texts rest upon a careful new collation of the original editions, and will be found, we believe, to possess a high degree of accuracy. The actual stage directions and scene divisions of the original texts are given, we believe, with the strict fidelity requisite for any intelligent study of early stage practice.
