From the foreword: The Chinese ceramic sculptures selected for the exhibition The Quest for Eternity represent one aspect of this ancient culture, its funerary customs. Figures of people, animals, and strange guardian creatures, models of homes, farms and fields were buried with the deceased to serve and sustain them in the afterlife. These interred objects have also served us by preserving the images of the inhabitants and material culture of China for more than five millennia.
