From the introduction: This book shows some of the military uniforms -both dress, for formal occasions, and combat, for the battlefield - worn by the American armed forces from 1639 to 1968. These uniforms have varied in cut and color in accordance with the military fashions of the time. For example, at the time of the Civil War, many of the armies of Europe had adopted uniforms cut in the French fashion, so both the Union and Confederate armies fought the war in uniforms patterned, more or less, on those of the army of Napoleon III.
