 1. MANCHESTER, WILLIAM  American Caesar. Douglas MacArthur 1880-1964.
Boston Little, Brown & Co., 1978 Hard Cover
793 pages, well illustrated, maps, cloth, dj, later printing, very good. US general & war hero in World War II & Korean War; superintendent of US Military Academy 1919-1922; army chief of staff 1930-1935; commanded US occupation of Japan 1945-1951; recalled by Harry Truman 1951. From the publisher: virtually all Americans above a certain age hold strong opinions about Douglas MacArthur. They either worship him or despise him. And they are all wrong, because their premises are rooted in apocrypha. Now one of our most outstanding writers, after a meticulous three-year examination of the record, presents his startling conclusions in this superb book. The narrative is gripping because the Generals' life was fascinating. It is moving because he was a man of vision. It finally ends in tragedy because his character, though majestic, was tragically flawed.

 4. MANCHESTER, WILLIAM  One brief shining moment : remembering Kennedy.
Boston Little Brown & Co., 1983 Hard Cover Very Good Good
280 pages, very well illustrated, cloth, dj, very good. 8-1/2 by 11 inches. From the dj: John Kennedy and William Manchester fist met in Boston in 1946. Young New England vets, they were both still recovering from crippling wounds suffered in the Pacific, where they both had been in fierce combat. While their careers would diverge, the friendship and respect that had spontaneously developed when they fist met, grew and deepened over the years. Knowing Manchester, confident of his discretion, and certain that he not only did not wan but would never accept a government position, President Kennedy was extraordinarily candid in their conversations. JFK encouraged Manchester to expand a series of magazine articles into the book Portrait of a President. Because of that work, JFK's widow and his brother Bobby selected Manchester to write the authorized history of the assassination, The Death of a President. Research for that book gave Manchester extensive and frequently exclusive access to the President's family, friends, and aides. Manchester writes that while JFK's death was a tragedy, his life was a triumph, and One Brief Shining Moment is a celebration of that triumph.

 6. MANCHESTER, WILLIAM  The death of a president. November 20 - November 25, 1963.
New York Harper & Row 1967 Hard Cover
710 pages, map endpapers, cloth, dust jacket frayed otherwise very good. From the publisher: The assassination of President John F. Kennedy was surely one of the most dramatic and deeply felt episodes in the history of this country. William Manchester's account of the six days surrounding the tragedy remains as uncannily vivid and powerful today as it was when it was first presented to the world in 1967 - and as definitive. In his introduction to this new edition, Manchester writes: 'Over the years since this book appeared I have been asked, from time to time, whether I have considered rewriting certain passages in the light of 'later developments.' The cruel fact is that there have been no such developments. Yet I understand those who yearn to find a conspiracy to kill the President. He would have died for something.'

 9. MANCHESTER, WILLIAM (Raymond)  The Last Lion. Winston Spencer Churchiill. Alone 1932-1940.
New York Dell Publishing Company 1989 Soft Cover Very Good
765 pages, 16 plates, pictorial wrappers, very good. From the publisher: William Manchester, in this triumphant biography, contends that Churchill's lonely battle against appeasement, even more than his leadership in war, was the Last Lion's finest hour. Politically isolated in Parliament, sometimes jeered at and scorned when he warned of the growing Nazi threat, Churchill stood alone, a beacon of hope amid the gathering storm.
