The Strongest Man, by Elizabeth Higgins Sullivan; The Slump, by Frederick Lansing Day; The Mourner, by James Mahoney; and Brotherhood, by William H. Wells. From the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition: "George Pierce Baker, 1866-1935, American educator, b. Providence, R.I., grad. Harvard, 1887. He taught (1888-1924) in the English department at Harvard and there conceived and instituted (1906) the 47 Workshop, a class on playwriting techniques and a laboratory of experimental productions. The first of its kind, the workshop was an inspiration to many young dramatists and gave impetus to the movement toward campus theater. In 1925 he went to Yale, where as professor of the history and technique of drama and director of the university theater he continued his work. Baker wrote The Development of Shakespeare as a Dramatist (1907, repr. 1965) and Dramatic Technique (1919) and edited the works of his students."

Includes his Civil War service as colonel of a Negro regiment, the First North Carolina Volunteers. From the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition, 'Higginsson (1823-1911) American author, b. Cambridge, Mass. A Unitarian minister, he was a leader in the abolitionist movement. His Army Life in a Black Regiment (1870), which recounts his experiences as colonel of the First South Carolina Volunteers, the first black regiment in the Civil War, was the basis of the film Glory (1989). A versatile author and an able scholar, he wrote essays; popular histories; a novel, Malbone (1869); and biographies and reminiscences of political and literary friends. In 1890–91, with M. L. Todd, he edited the Poems of his friend Emily Dickinson. A lifelong radical, in his old age (1906), Higginson joined with Jack London and Upton Sinclair to found the Intercollegiate Socialist Society.'

[6], 195 pages, illustrations, boards, fine. William W. Wells was born in Nashville and is a graduate of Vanderbilt University. After serving in World War II, he was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and served for two years as a fighter pilot. Based on a collection of more than 180 letters that Wells wrote home to his family while he was taking fighter pilot training in England. He was an escort for Joseph Kennedy Jr.'s secret mission when Kennedy's plane exploded. He tells of his part in D-day and of the special mission to Russia, Italy and return to England - a so-called 'Shuttle Mission.' Also included are a number of mission summaries exactly as they were recorded.
