13 Memorial addresses on the life and character of William Pitt Fessenden (A Senator of Maine) delivered in the Senate and House of Representatives. 41st Congress, 2d Session, December 14, 1869.
Washington, Government Printing Office, 1870 Hard Cover
82 pages, frontispiece (engraved portrait), cloth, some shelf wear otherwise very good. From the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition, 'William Pitt Fessenden (1806-69), American politician, b. Boscawen, N.H. Admitted (1827) to the bar, he began practice in Portland in 1829 and by 1835 was regarded as one of the leading lawyers of Maine. A Whig, he served several terms in the state legislature and one (1841–43) in the U.S. House of Representatives. Fessenden was active in organizing the Republican party in Maine and in 1854 was elected to the U.S. Senate, where, except for nine months as Lincoln’s Secretary of the Treasury (June, 1864–Mar., 1865), he remained until his death. Beginning with a notable speech against the Kansas-Nebraska Act, he gained a reputation as one of the Senate’s greatest debaters. Made a member of the finance committee in 1857, Fessenden was its chairman during most of the Civil War. In that capacity and as Secretary of the Treasury he established an excellent record in public finance, trying to confine expenditures to necessary measures and to resist inflation. In Dec., 1865, he became chairman of the joint committee on Reconstruction and wrote most of its famous report. Although he believed Congress, and not the President, should direct Reconstruction, and although he disliked Andrew Johnson personally, he refused to vote for Johnson’s impeachment. He also refused to vote on the Tenure of Office Act and in general acted more moderately than his fellow radical Republicans. His course, particularly in regard to the impeachment proceedings, was contrary to the expressed wishes of his constituency, and for a time he was unpopular.'

20 The Gannetts: William Howard Gannett and Guy Patterson Gannett
Portland, ME 1946 Hardcover Very Good
[1], 16, [3] pages, 3 illustrations, marbled boards, vellum backstrip, slipcase, very good. From the Wikipedia website: "William Howard Gannett, of Augusta, Maine, first published Comfort magazine in 1888 -- an eight-page advertisement for a patent medicine -- but it was his son, Guy P. Gannett, who headed the push into daily journalism. After a stint helping with the magazine after his 1901 graduation from Yale University, the junior Gannett went into local politics. By 1920, he was a prominent citizen in Portland and two daily newspaper owners -- representing the Portland Herald and the Portland Daily Press -- had asked him to buy them out. Gannett invested in both companies. In 1921, he completed his purchase of the two Portland papers, merging them into one Portland Press Herald, and also bought the Waterville Morning Sentinel in Waterville, Maine. In 1925 he added, for US$550,000, the Portland Evening Express and Daily Advertiser and Portland Sunday Telegram. Four years later, Guy Gannett Publishing Co. Tacked on the Kennebec Journal in Augusta. At first, the company expanded beyond newspapers with WGAN radio (1938) and television (1954) stations in Portland only (WGAN-TV was renamed WGME in the 1980s). In 1967, Guy Gannett began to buy television properties outside Maine. " ME223 ; 16 pages
