In the afternoon of September 6, 1976, with only 30 seconds of fuel remaining, a MiG-25 broke through the clouds above Hakodate, Japan, narrowly avoided a departing Japanese airliner, and dove down to the city's commercial airport where, in front of hundreds of amazed Japanese motorists, it landed screeching, skidding, blowing a tire, plowing 800 feet off the runway, and finally stopping a few feet from a large antenna. Soviet Pilot Lt. Viktor Ivanovich Belenko had arrived in the west. Lt. Belenko was from the 513th Fighter Regiment at the Siberian Base of Sakharovka, Soviet Air Defense Command. President Ford granted Belenko asylum in the United States and the pilot underwent five months of questioning and interrogation. The United States Government established a Trust Fund for him and the interest alone afforded Belenko very comfortable living in the U. S. He nowdays works as an aerospace engineering consultant and lecturer. His life in the Soviet Union, his spectacular defection (flying at times barely above sea level to avoid pursuit and surface-to-air missiles) and his discovery of life in the United States is told MiG Pilot: The Final Escape of Lieutenant Belenko.

14 BELOFF, MAX The foreign policy of Soviet Russia 1929-1941. Volume II 1936-1941.
London Oxford University Press, 1949 Hard Cover Very Good in Good dust jacket
434 pages, cloth, dj, very good. Red underlining and notes in margin in Chapter 11: The Soviet Union and the Western Allies: March to August 1939. Fourth impression. From the publisher: This second volume takes up the main narrative where the first volume left off, at the spring of 1936, and continues to the date of the German attack on Russia in June 1941. It gives the Soviet interpretation of the international history of those years as found in Soviet publications, and places it alongside the documentation available from other sources. Chapters are devoted to the civil war in Spain, as it affected and was affected by the policy of the Soviet Union, and to the Montreux Conference on the Straits. The main body of the volume traces the course of Soviet policy in relation to the conflict developing among the European powers, from the remilitarization of the Rhineland, through the Munich settlement and the German occupation of Bohemia-Moravia. It also deals with the Soviet negotiations with Britain and France, the pact with Germany, and the territorial changes in Eastern Europe which marked the period between the outbreak of war and the entry of the Soviet Union as a belligerent. The final chapter attempts an analysis of the principles guiding Soviet foreign policy, and gives a brief account of the departments of the Soviet Government concerned. A classified bibliography is provided for the two volumes, as well as a series of maps to illustrate the territorial changes in Eastern Europe between 1938 and 1941.
