From the Foreword, 'On being asked by the Governor of Maine to arrange a Pageant in honor of the dedication of the new Carlton Bridge across the Kennebec, I have tried to write a Pageant of the History of the State of Maine. The Pageant is in no sense a local history of Bath, or of the Kennebec, but purposes as far as is possible in a two hour performance, a dramatic history of Maine.'
