1 TILLYARD, STELLA Aristocrats: The Illustrated Companion to the Television Series
London Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1999 0297825054 / 9780297825050 Hard Cover Very Good in Good dust jacket
208 pages, well illustrated in color, cloth, dj, very good. From the dj: When Lady Caroline Lennox ran away with the ambitious politician Henry Fox in 1744 she could have had no idea that the elopement marked the beginning of a family drama in which, for the next fifty eyas, she and her three sisters Emily, Louisa and Sarah tried to achieve happiness in an often hostile world. Daughters of the second Duke of Richmond and great-granddaughters of England's Merry Monarch Charles II, they married into the world of high politics and the court, and lived through the turbulent times of the late 18th century from the Jacobite Rebellion to the French Revolution. Mistresses of some of the grandest houses in England and Ireland - Holland House, Leinster House, Carton and Castletown - their lives were splendidly magnificent. They left behind not just a vast written archive, but the portraits, furniture, houses and gardens that they had commissioned, bought and created. This volume, which accompanies the major TV drama series, not only lavishly portrays their treasure troves of houses, objects and paintings but also uses stills taken on location to show the actors in their settings and costumes. In her text Stella Tillyard uses new material from the sisters' letters to take us deep into their opinions, tastes and habits and to describe how and where they bought their furniture and found their gardeners and how they filled their days in country and in town. It is an ideal companion to the drama series, a delightful addition to the world described in Aristocrats and a beautifully illustrated introduction to the grand world of the British aristocracy in the 18th century.
