Curtis, Governor of Maine 1966-1974 during whose administration the Maine-Rio Grande do Norte Partnership was formed. Afterword by Alan Rubin. From the foreword: In the 1940s when the world was embroiled in all-out war, thousands of Americans came to know the City of Natal in the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil. One such American was Wally Haselton, a well known Maine banker, who crash landed a war worn flying fortress in Natal. He was one of those many airmen returning from the European Theater via Africa, who came to know and appreciate the friendly people of Rio Grande do Norte. The feeling was mutual, and fond memories of the Americans still remain in this part of Brazil. In 1967 Mainers were to again have the opportunity to meet and know the people of this beautiful tropical area. The Partners of the Alliance gave me, as Governor, and an active group of citizens the opportunity to join Maine and Rio Grande do Norte as sister states. Even though separated by thousands of miles and the equator, it was a natural union. We found we shared a common heritage of dependence upon agriculture and the sea; a heritage demanding that its people be hardy, proud and self-reliant.
