From the dj, 'Dr. Margaret Mead, one of the world's foremost anthropologists, relates here the events of her life up to World War Two and the effects each of her remarkable experiences had on her. The seeds of her lifelong career were planted at Barnard College in New York, where she studied under anthropologists Ruth Benedict and Franz Boas. Vividly described are her early field trips - to Samoa, New Guinea, Bali - and the opposition she overcame as a young woman studying alone the native people of the South Pacific, then an activity unprecedented and shocking to many. She also writes with candor about the personal experiences of her childhood, of her adolescence and college days, of her three marriages and of the intricacies of her own motherhood. Dr. Mead's extensive work reflected her interest in the psychology of culture and often dealt with such issues as race, sex and marriage, child rearing, mental health, feminism and education. Here is a self-portrait of a woman who was liberated from convention more than sixty years ago and who lived life to the full until her death in November 1978.
