From the dj: Fifty years ago, the Red Air Force consisted of a motley collection of British, French and German aircraft, many of them gleaned from the scrap-heaps of European battlefields. This book traces the course of its development since those early days. We see its emergence during the 1920s and 1930s when Russian pilots fought in the Far East against the Chinese and Japanese and in Spain against Franco. Then comes the story of the Second World War, beginning with the near-annihilation of Soviet air power and ending with the last great battles in the sky over Berlin. Afterwards comes the Cold War with the part played by the Soviet Air Force in harassing the Berlin Air Lift and in Korea. Then in 1956 the tragedy of Hungary and the involvement of Soviet airmen in the Arab-Israeli conflict. We see the secret radar war fought in the stratosphere between Russian and American reconnaissance aircraft, culminating nit he U-2 incident and the Cuban Crisis. Finally, for the first time, the story of the part played by the Soviet Air Force in the invasion of Czechoslovakia; and there is a glimpse into the future, to the possibility that the Soviet Air Force may yet have to fight its greatest battle -in an armed conflict with China.
