Contributed to the Saturday Review, Fraser's Magazine and Nation. Co-founder of Pall Mall Gazette, editor of Cornhill Magazine, first editor of Dictionary of National Biography, contributed many of the most important biographies of 18th and 19th centuries and saw completion of 26 volumes before being forced by ill health to retire in 1891.
