NORRIS, GERALD Stanford, the Cambridge Jubilee and Tchaikovsky Newton Abbot, David & Charles, 1980 Hard Cover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket 584 pages, 4 plates, cloth, dj, very good. From the publisher: Stanford, the Cambridge Jubilee and Tchaikovsky relates how Cambridge University invited certain foreign composers to come to receive honorary doctorates and take part in a concert celebrating the Musical Society's jubilee in June 1893. The University hoped that Brahms and Verdi would accept, but after each had declined, the doctorates were granted to a number of other composers, among whom was Tchaikovsky. The book surveys the Musical Society's achievements over its first 50 years and follows the career of Charles Stanford, who did so much to make it a success. Tchaikovsky's four visits to England, culminating in the trip to Cambridge, are described in detail; the gradual acceptance of his works in England and the critical reaction to them are fully discussed. In addition, the book gives a fascinating picture of English musical life during the second half of the 19th century, bringing to light many remarkable men and women who were once household names. The interest taken in music by writers such as Dickens, Tennyson, Browning and George Eliot and painters like Millais, Alma Tadema and Leighton is also intriguingly explored. One is led to conclude that the Victorians were an exceptionally musical people. Price:
