Warner, Denis and Warner, Peggy with Seno, Sadao The Sacred Warriors: Japan's Suicide Legions New York Van Nostrand Reinold 1982 0442254180 / 9780442254186 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket Xii, [2], 370 pages, 6 plates, 4 maps, cloth, DJ, very good. From the dust jacket: "Imperial Japan had become a shogunate dominated by the ancient samurai code of honor, that it is better to die than to surrender. Only Japan would try to stave off defeat by creating a fanatical suicide squad known as the "Divine Wind". Denis Warner, a war correspondent aboard a ship that suffered two kamikaze onslaughts, and Commander Sadao Seno, assigned to command a midget submarine toward the end of the war, bring to life this fascinating, behind-the-scenes account of Japan's 'special attack forces. ' . . . The authors examine the impact these suicide squadrons had on the outcome of the war. Also recounted in detail is a horror even more frightening than the Divine Wind: the development of chemical and biological weapons. " B22-4 ; 370 pages Price:

Warner, Denis and Peggy The Tide At Sunrise. a History of the Russo-Japanese War, 1904-1905. New York Charterhouse 1974 Hardcover Good+ Xii, 659 pages, plates, maps, cloth, DJ, ex-library with usual library markings otherwise very good. Book club edition. From Contemporary Review, Feb, 2002: "The Tide at Sunrise: A History of the Russo-Japanese War 1904-1905. In many ways the war between the Russian Empire of Nicholas II and Japan is the forgotten war. However this was the first 'modern' war of the twentieth century. It introduced the use of machine-guns and electrified barbed war and saw battles far larger than Waterloo or any fighting in the Crimean War or the Boer War. More importantly, the naval fighting in the Yellow Sea and the Straits of Tsushima encouraged the naval competition between Germany and the U. K. That helped lead to the Great War. The Russian defeats also almost proved fatal for the Tsarist regime. They encouraged Japanese nationalism and dreams of imperial expansion that were to prove so terrible in 1941. While this new edition of a study first published in 1974 does not appear to have been revised, it is still a timely publication of a study which is as pertinent today as it was when firs t published.
