From the preface: "My late father's diary of his terrible experiences in the whale-ship Diana in 1866-67 has been in my possession for a great number of years. It was not until a ship I was surgeon of happened to go to Hull in October, 1920, that I became aware of there being some relics of the Diana in existence still, and on exhibition in two of the Hull museums. It was the sight of these relics that reawakened my interest in the story of the Diana, and which impelled me to take in hand at last my father's old manuscript with a view to editing it for publication."

SMITH, CHARLES Lord Mountbatten His Butler's Story

1st Earl Mountbatten (of Burma), Louis (Francis Albert Victor Nicholas) Mountbatten, British Admiral of the Fleet and statesman, he joined the Royal Navy in 1916. In World War 2 he became chief of Combined Operations Command (1942), and played a key role in preparations for D-Day. In 1943 he was appointed supreme commander in SE Asia, where he defeated the Japanese offensive into India (1944), and worked closely with Slim to reconquer Burma (1945). He received the Japanese surrender at Singapore, and in 1947 was sworn in as last Viceroy of India prior to independence. Created an earl in 1947, he returned to the Admiralty, and became First Sea Lord (1954) and chief of the defence staff (1959). Retiring in 1965, he remained in the public eye, and was assassinated by Irish terrorists while fishing off Mullaghmore near his summer home, Classiebawn Castle, Co Sligo, Ireland. (AND).

1964 reprint of edition originally published in 1950. 142 pages, well illustrated, pictorial wrappers, some shelf wear otherwise very good. From the foreword by Leigh Ashton, Director: "Much of the story of the Crystal Palace is told here in the words of contemporary Victorians; and, by gracious permission of His Majesty the King, many entries from Queen Victoria's private journal have been included." From the Wikipedia website: "The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations or The Great Exhibition, sometimes referred to as the Crystal Palace Exhibition in reference to the temporary structure in which it was held, was an international exhibition that took place in Hyde Park, London, from 1 May to 15 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World's Fair exhibitions of culture and industry that were to become a popular 19th-century feature. The Great Exhibition was organized by Henry Cole and Prince Albert, the spouse of the reigning monarch, Queen Victoria. It was attended by numerous notable figures of the time, including Charles Darwin, Samuel Colt, members of the Orléanist Royal Family and the writers Charlotte Brontë, Lewis Carroll, and George Eliot."
