1 NODIER, CHARLES The Luck of the Bean-rows : a fairy tale
London Daniel O'Connor 1921 Hard Cover Very Good
Translated from the French of Charles Nodier, illustrated by Claud Lovat Fraser. 60 pages, text sketches, decorated boards, very good. From the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition: Charles Nodier, 1780-1844, French novelist and poet. From 1824 he was librarian of the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in Paris. His salon was the nucleus of the beginning romantic movement and was frequented by such men as Hugo, Sainte-Beuve, and Dumas père. His most noted works are the fantastic tales Trilby; ou, Le Lutin d'Argail (1822) and La Fée aux miettes (1832). From the Rutgers University website of Special Collections: Claude Lovat Fraser worked as a designer and illustrator in the period around World War One. Unfortunately, he followed in the great tradition of English illustrators, such as Charles H. Bennett and Randolph Caldecott, who died young. Lovat, as he was known, died at 31, with a reputation well beyond his years for originality and style.
