Bigelow, John Retrospections of an Active Life. 1817-1863. Volume One.

Xiv, 645 pages, plates, cloth, top of back strip frayed otherwise very good. Volume One only. Has an original contemporary studio photograph of the author, approximately four by six inches. Bigelow (1817- 1911) was co-editor and co-owner with William Cullen Bryant of the New York Evening Post (1848-61) , U. S. Consul general at Paris (1861-65) and U. S. Minister to France (1865-66). Bigelow alternated verbatim extracts from contemporary letters, speeches and dispatches with a sensible informed commentary on American wartime diplomacy, Nevins Vol. I, p.246. He was also the author of France and the Confederate Navy, 1862-1868, an international episode, published in 1888. In 1913 Bigelow published two further volumes of his later experiences.
