Biddle, Wayne Barons of the Sky. New York Simon & Schuster 1991 0671667262 / 9780671667269 Hardcover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket 366, [1] pages, 8 plates, cloth, DJ, very good. From Library Journal: Through meticulous research of private papers and archives, Biddle brings to light the history of aviation weapons research and production. He presents individual biographies of Glenn Curtis, Glenn Martin, Jack Northrup, Donald Douglas, and the Loughead brothers (Lockheed Corp. ) and describes the evolution of the companies they started in garages and sheds. Bound by a technological curiosity yet unschooled in business, these men struggled to emerge as leaders in military aviation. Biddle also recounts the political and economic forces that shaped the industry from Kitty Hawk through the next five decades. Especially interesting is his discussion of how the early airplanes, branded as "merchants of death" by the antiwar sentiment of the 1930s, had to prove themselves as weapons systems to doubting government officials. This is well written, fills a gap in the literature, and is recommended for general technical collections. ; 366 pages Price:
