164 pages, very well illustrated (many in color), cloth, dj, 8-1/2 by 11 inches, very good. Text in French and English i.e. 'The building has a very unusual history. The Viceroy, Duke of Ossuna, began its construction on the hill of S. Teresa, which at that time was deserted, and intended to use it for a riding school, but he was unable to complete it on account of a faulty water supply… Between 1780 and 1820 restorations and alterations were carried out under the guidance of the architect Fuga and particularly under Schiantarelli, who was the architect who carried out the final work of adaptation to a museum…But the National Museum of Naples owes its origin to the precious collections of sculpture and painting that Charles of Bourbon had inherited from the Farnese family's Parma branch, which had now died out: for the most part they were works of sculpture that the Farneses had collected in Rome during a period of great excavating activity at the Baths of Caracalla and at the Palatine or which, like the collection of gems, they had inherited from the Medicis of Florence.'
