Purportedly the first musical society in the United States named for the great German composer. From Music and Musicians of Maine (by George Thornton Edwards) : "Ira Berry (1801-1891) , one of the publishers of the Portland Daily Advertiser, was a music critic and author of A Sketch of the History of the Beethoven Society of Portland, published in 1888.
