1 ASHMORE, HARRY S. Unseasonable truths. The life of Robert Maynard Hutchins.
Boston Little Brown & Co. , 1989 First Edition Hard Cover
616 pages, 8 plates, cloth, dj, very good. From the dj: Precociously brilliant and endowed the will, energy, and presence to promote his convictions, Robert Maynard Hutchins (1899-1977) was one of the major voices of the twentieth century. In the course of his long career as legal scholar, political philosopher, educational reformer, and civil libertarian, he became the most celebrated - and most controversial - intellectual of his era. From 1927, when at age 28 he became the youngest dean ever of the Yale Law School, until his death in 1977, Hutchins was an irrepressible spokesman in the great debates over public and private education, the liberties and rights of the citizenry, the impact of rapid technological development, the shortcomings of the communications media, and the need for an international rule of law. By the time he was 31 he had become president of the University of Chicago, where he sent shock waves through the national educational establishment with pioneering changes. It was here that Hutchins began his long tenure as chairman of Encyclopaedia Britannica's board of editors and editor of the Great Books series.
