1 WOOLLCOTT, ALEXANDER Long long ago
New York Viking Press, 1943 Hard Cover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
280 pages, cloth, dj, near fine. From the dj: A Goodly Company. Being a bird's-eye view of the people, the institutions, the facts, and fancies that attracted the attention and sympathy of Alexander Woollcott in the past ten years. Oliver Wendell Holmes appears twice in these pages -- once in the company of Abraham Lincoln and once at a meeting with Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Katharine Cornell here puts on one of her finest performances; George Bernard Shaw is seen in a characteristic episode; Orson Welles and George Gershwin display their temperaments in their own special ways. Readers who have never heard of the Fountain Inn 'Tribune' have a treat in store for them; as have those who will learn for the first time of a small boy who successfully defended his good name against the might of the British Empire. Very moving is the history of the man who succeeded Father Damien, of the woman who brought Helen Keller back into the world; most bizarre are the details of the Hall-Mills and Snyder-Gray killings; and the later history of the only man in the world who ever persuaded a camel to walk backward should be an inspiration to every reader. Some may be startled to learn that a Lord Jeffery Amherst is still soldiering for his king; others will be edified by the musical education of Harpo Marx. It matters not who your heroes are -- H.G. Wells or Stephen Foster, Clarence Day or Franz Schubert, Norman Bel Geddes or Emily Bronte, Woollcott has a new anecdote for your enrichment. A Literary Guild Selection. Jacket Design By Rand Holub, Caricature on jacket and binding by W. Auerbach-Levy.
