3 McKEE, ALEXANDER (PAUL CHARRIER) The race for the Rhine bridges, 1940, 1944, 1945.
New York Stein & Day, 1971 Hard Cover Very Good
448 pages, 6 plates, sketch maps, boards. "As the Germans lost ground, the inevitable order to blow the bridges behind them came. Hitler ordered that any officer who failed to blow a bridge in time was to be shot. But he complicated the difficult decision by adding that anyone who blew a Rhine bridge too early was also to be shot." From Chapter One (Rhine and Ruhr): "The third - and last - Battle of Arnhem was at its height. In its axis of advance it was almost an exact duplicate of the first battle, which had taken place there a month short of five years before. But because this was 1945 and not 1940, the forces engaged and the machines and weapons involved were immensely greater. And its objectives were different."
