Their father, who was born into slavery, became America's first elected black Episcopal bishop. His daughters, after they moved to Harlem during the World War I era, were among the first African American women professionals in New York City - Sadie as a schoolteacher and Bessie as a dentist. Since the publication of their autobiography/memoir Having Our Say, the sisters have become international celebrities.
