403 The Admiralties: Operations of the 1st Cavalry Division 29 February - 18 May 1944
Washington Center of Military History, United States Army 1990 Softcover Very Good with no dust jacket
X, 151 pages, well illustrated, maps, pictorial wrappers, very good. First printed by the Historical Division, War Department, for the American Forces in Action series, 1946. CMH Pub 100-3. From the foreword by Harold W. Nelson, Colonel, FA, Chief of Military History: "The Admiralties: Operations of the 1st Cavalry Division (29 February -18 May 1944) is one of a series of fourteen studies of World War II operations originally published by the War Department's Historical Division and now returned to print as part of the Army's commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of that momentous clash of arms. These volumes, prepared by professional historians shortly after the events described, provide a concise summary of some of the major campaigns and battles fought by American soldiers. The skillful combination of combat interviews with primary sources, many of which are now lost, gives these unassuming narratives a special importance to military historians. The careful analysis of key operations provides numerous lessons for today's military students."

404 The Life of Governor Louis Kossuth with his public speeches in the United States, and a brief history of the Hungarian war of independence.
Budapest Osiris Kiado 2001 9633891884 Hard Cover
"Published under the auspices of the Embassy of Hungary in Washington, D.C. in honor of the 150th anniversary of Governor-President Louis Kossuth's visit to the United States." 199 pages, 7 plates, cloth, very good. Reprint of the 1852 publication with an epilogue by Steven Béla Várdy. From the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition, Louis Kossuth, Hung. Kossuth Lajos, 1802-94, Hungarian revolutionary hero. Born of a Protestant family and a lawyer by training, he entered politics as a member of the diet and soon won a large following. His liberal and nationalist program did not avoid the possibility of dissolving the union of the Hungarian and Austrian crowns. He was arrested in 1837, but popular pressure forced the Metternich regime to release him in 1840. Kossuth, a fiery orator, was one of the principal figures of the Hungarian revolution of Mar., 1848. When, in April, Hungary was granted a separate government, Kossuth became finance minister. He continued and intensified his anti-Austrian agitation. His principles were liberal, but his nationalism was opposed to the fulfillment of the national aspirations of the Slavic, Romanian, and German minorities in Hungary and was particularly resented in Croatia. When the Austrian government, supported by the ban [governor] of Croatia, Count Jellachich de Buzim, prepared to move against Hungary, Kossuth became head of the Hungarian government of national defense. His government withdrew to Debrecen before the advance of the Austrians under Alfred Windischgrätz. In Apr., 1849, the Hungarian parliament declared Hungary an independent republic and Kossuth became president. The Hungarians won several victories, but in 1849, Russian troops intervened in favor of Austria, and Kossuth was obliged to resign the government to General Görgey. The Hungarian surrender at Vilagos marked the end of the republic. Kossuth fled to Turkey. He visited England and the United States and received ovations as a champion of liberty. Kossuth lived in exile in England and (after 1865) in Italy. He was dissatisfied with the Ausgleich [compromise] of 1867, by which the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy was created, and he refused an offer of amnesty in 1890. After his death at Turin, Italy, his body was returned to Budapest and buried in state.

407 Hans Christian Andersen: The Life of a Storyteller.
New York Alfred A. Knopf, 2001 0679455086 Soft Cover
479 pages, frontispiece (portrait), illustrations, maps, wrappers, very good. 1st American edition. From the dj: The first major biography of Hans Christian Andersen - the man and his work. His tales are among the best known in Western literature, and through saccharine film portrays of Andersen himself, we imagine we know the man as well. Now, in this illuminating book, we discover how wrong that assumption is. In fact, Andersen lived a painfully difficult life, and his story is often a sad and even terrifying one: sexually confused and frustrated, a brilliant and powerful writer, his success was never enough to satisfy him. Drawing upon a wealth of original sources in Danish and German, Jackie Wullschlager traces the course of Andersen's life - from the provincial town where he was born in 1805, to the scenes of his triumph as the most famous writer in mid-19th century Europe. She delineates the complex psychological underpinnings of his tales and brilliantly evokes his world - Golden Age Copenhagen, the princely courts of Germany, the country villas of the Danish countryside, the inspiring warmth of Italy. Hans Christian Andersen is brought unforgettably to life in all his cross-grained charm and awkwardness, his desperation for love, his ambition, and his achievement. With 24 pages of photographs.

424 Triumph without victory : the unreported history of the Persian Gulf War
New York Times Books, 1992 0812919483 Hard Cover Very Good in Good dust jacket
477 pages, maps, cloth, dj, very good. From the publisher: The Gulf War was one of the largest military operations in recent American history. And yet for all the media attention it received, it was largely waged in secret. It was a war in which many of the advances in American weaponry were successfully tested. It was a technological triumph. It was also a hollow victory. For while Iraq's army was ultimately forced out of Kuwait, Saddam Hussein remained in power. Triumph Without Victory is a masterwork of military and diplomatic history that combines battlefield-level detail with command-level history. Because of the Pentagon's policy of restrictive 'press pools,' neither the air campaign nor the four-day ground war was effectively covered. The policy ensured that the war would be both sanitized and mostly invisible. Now, for the first time, the actual battles as they unfolded are recounted in vivid detail, based on scores of postwar interviews with the combatants themselves. The result is a landmark of military history, which combines a dramatic journalistic sensibility with the rigorous demands of historical scholarship in a single, sweeping chronicle of war and politics.

441 Landscapes of England : British Heritage Series
Surrey, UK Crown Books 1985 0862833345 Hard Cover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
160 pages, very well illustrated in color, cloth, dj, oblong, 11-1/2 by 8-1/2 inches, very good. From the dj: England has some of the most enchanting landscapes in the world. Her varied scenes dance before the eye in a kaleidoscope of color and form. The rising peaks of the Lake District form a suitable backdrop to the spreading lakes while the rolling downlands provide some of the gentlest and best-loved scenes of rural England. Stands of forest give way to the hedgerow-trimmed fields of waving wheat and grazing stock which are so typical of the countryside. And tucked within this landscape of tree and crop are the villages whose rose-bedecked cottages and stone-spired churches have made the open fields so peculiarly English. In a wealth of full-color photographs, this book captures the best of the English scene. The glowing tones o;f the landscape reveal the peculiar charm of the country which has captured the hearts of millions.

450 Illustrirte kriegs-chronik: gedenkbuch an den feldzug von 1866 in Deutschland und Italien
Leipzig, J. J. Weber 1867 Hard Cover Very Good
xiv, 306, [4 advertising] pages, very well illustrated, maps, cloth, gilt decorations on cover, new cloth backstrip, 11-1/2 by 16-1/2 inches, very good. Quite scarce. From the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition: "The Austro-Prussian War or Seven Weeks War, June 15-Aug. 23, 1866, between Prussia, allied with Italy, and Austria, seconded by Bavaria, Württemberg, Saxony, Hanover, Baden, and several smaller German states. It was deliberately provoked by Bismarck, over the objections of his king, in order to expel Austria from the German Confederation as a step toward the unification of Germany under Prussian dominance. The pretext for precipitating the conflict was found in the dispute between Prussia and Austria over the administration of Schleswig-Holstein. When Austria brought the dispute before the German diet and also decided to convene the Holstein diet, Prussia, declaring that the Gastein Convention (see under Gastein) had thereby been nullified, invaded Holstein. When the German diet responded by voting for a partial mobilization against Prussia, Bismarck declared that the German Confederation was ended. With an efficient military machine that amazed Europe, Prussia overran the German states allied with Austria and crushed (July 3) the Austrians at Sadowa (Königgrätz), in E Bohemia. However, Bismarck had no intention of weakening Austria, a potential ally, more than necessary. The preliminary treaty of Nikolsburg (July 26) was followed (Aug. 23) by the Treaty of Prague. Against Italy, the Austrians had won victories on the land, at Custozza, and on the sea, at Lissa. Nevertheless, the peace treaty forced Austria to cede Venetia to Italy. Prussia, satisfied with the exclusion, acknowledged in the treaty, of Austria from German affairs, demanded no territory from Austria, but annexed Hanover, Hesse, Nassau, and Frankfurt, in addition to Schleswig-Holstein. The German Confederation was replaced by the Prussian-led North German Confederation. Thus the war paved the way for the establishment (1871) of the German Empire and the reorientation of Austria (reorganized in 1867 as the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy) toward the east. The moderate peace terms facilitated the Austro-German alliance of 1879."

465 Sardar Sarovar : the report of the Independent Review
Ottawa Published for the Independent Review By Resource Futures International 1992 0969632509 Soft Cover Very Good
Chairman, Bradford Morse, deputy chairman, Thomas Berger ; senior advisors, environment, Donald Gamble, resettlement, Hugh Brody. Xxviii,363 pages, illustrations, map, pictorial wrappers, very good. "Sardar Sarovar is a dam planned on the Narmada River in northwest India. It is the centerpiece of a plan to bring irrigation to 1.8 million hectares, along 75,000 kilometers of canals, in what would be the largest such system in the world. The project is also destined to bring drinking water to 40 million people, and to generate electricity. But the Sardar Sarovar dam entails the displacement and resettlement of at least 100,000 people. A further 140,000 people could be impacted by the canals. In 1985 the World Bank agreed to lend a total of $450 million for these projects. This immense development and the World Bank's role in it have become the focus of heated controversy. ~ The work of the Review represents the first independent assessment of an internationally supported development project. No lending or aid institution has ever before accepted that its decisions and procedures be submitted to this kind of public scrutiny. This is the Independent Reviews final report."

474 Land's Polaroid : a company and the man who invented it
Boston Houghton Mifflin Co. 1987 0395421144 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good in Very Good dust jacket
258 pages, 12 plates, cloth, dj, very good. From the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition: Edwin Herbert Land, 1909-91, American inventor and photographic pioneer. While at Harvard, Land became interested in the properties and manipulation of polarized light. He left Harvard and, in 1932, created Polaroid J Sheet, a polarizing material that was inexpensive and easy to fabricate. In partnership with George Wheelwright, a Harvard physics instructor, Land in 1937 founded the Polaroid Corporation, where he adapted polarized materials for sunglasses, 3-D movies, and military use. In 1947 he demonstrated a single-step photographic process that enabled pictures to be developed in 60 seconds; a color process was marketed in 1963, and a self-developing positive print followed in 1973. In the original Land process, a negative material was exposed inside the camera and then drawn out, while being squeezed against a layer of reagent and a positive material. After 60 (later 10) seconds the layers could be separated and the negative discarded. In the current Polacolor process, light makes a series of latent images on appropriate dye layers of the film sheet; when the picture is ejected from the camera, processing reagent activates the image in these lower layers, which reaches final form after several minutes. The resulting print is protected by a hard plastic film. (See photographic processing.) Holder of more than 500 patents, Land founded the Rowland Institute of Science in 1960 and devoted his time to it after his retirement from Polaroid in 1980.

The very idea of a group of former POWs and civilian internees (the difference is slight between the two) and next of kin banding together in the interest of justice and good is almost without precedent. As I see it, our goal is to create and maintain a single fraternity, based on the bonds of fellowship that only we can know, and dedicated to the proposition that no American must ever again endure the hell we know so well" - (Kenneth Day, 1949).

482 Holcomb, Fitz, and Peate: three 19th century American telescope makers.
Washington, Smithsonian Institution, 1962 Soft Cover Very Good
Introduction by Robert P. Multhauf. Pages 156 to 184, illustrations, wrappers, very good, 8-1/2 by 11 inches. Contents : Amasa Holcomb, autobiographical sketch.--Henry Fitz, by J. F. Howell.--John Peate, by F. W. Preston and W. J. McGrath, Jr. Contributions from the Museum of History and Technology; Paper 26. Practically all the telescopes used by amateur scientists in 18th century America were of European origin. Our dependence upon foreign sources for these instruments continued well into the 19th century, and the beginning of telescope making in this country has conventionally been associated with the names of Alvan Clark and John Brashear, whose work dates from the 1860s. Presented here are biographical sketches of two predecessors and a contemporary of Clark and Brashear whose obscurity is not deserved. The accounts relate some hitherto little-known aspects of telescope making in America as it progressed from mechanic art to science."

498 The Annual Register, or a View of the History, Politics, and Literature for the Year 1803. [Volume XLV]
London J. Seeley 1805 First Edition Hardcover Good
Vi, 956, [14] pages, newly rebound, ex-library with usual library markings, text very good. Volume 45 only. 1st edition. From the preface: "In offering to the public the present volume of a work of such long established reputation as the Annual Register - and the former volumes of which have already assumed a place of no inconsiderable rank among the historical documents of our country - we cannot but feel an anxiety proportioned to the subjects of which we have had to treat. Already, in the close of our preceding volume, we had anticipated the renewal of the war, that great event which forms the leading feature of the period, whose transactions are here related; and which will, in its influence, too probably pervade all the political relations of the country during a long course of succeeding years. At a time, when the public press appeared almost exclusively devoted, to the object of prolonging the delusive expectation of permanent tranquility, we ventured to offer it as our opinion, that a Peace negotiated in a tone of submission, and concluded on terms of manifest inferiority, with an ambitious and overbearing neighbour, was not likely to be of long continuance. " Includes Discouraging Prospects at the Commencement of the Year, Account of the Conspiracy, King's Message, respecting the Affairs of the Prince of Wales, India Budget, Debate in the House of Lords on the Earl of Carlisle's Motion for Naval Enquiry, Proceedings in Parliament after the Easter Recess, Secretary at War brings forward the Army Estimates for the Year, Proceedings of Parliament on the Property Tax Bill, King's Message on the Irish Insurrection, Negotiation of the Minister with Mr. Pitt, Recapitulation of the relative Circumstances of England and France, previously to, and immediately after, the Treaty of Amiens, Report of Sebastiani, Declaration of War, Affairs of Ireland, Affairs of the West-Indies, Transactions of the French in St. Domingo, Affairs of the United States of America, Letter from Captain Bligh to Admiral Duckworth, Trial of Colonel Marcus Despard, Dispatch from Lord Whitworth to Lord Hawkesbury, Characters, Habits, and Manners of the Maroons, Particulars relative to the Construction of, and Benefits received from, sundry Life Boats, built by Mr. Henry Greathand, or under his Direction, in and since the Year 1789, Lines on James IV of Scotland, who fell at the Battle of Flodden, by T.
